Legends in Haut Val de Sèvre |
The Puits d'Enfer Perhaps around the year 1000 ... A brave farmer from Exireuil owning meadow-lands in Nanteuil came one Sunday morning to glance, just before the mass, at the field he had mown the day before. The hay was good and dry. It would be good for his beast and the sale. But suddenly, a small black cloud appeared predicting the storm. It was Sunday, the Lord's day. Was he going to miss the whole reward of his work ? No, impossible. So, here he was coming back in a hurry to his stable and hitching up his oxen. But, in that period, to go from his meadow-lands to his farm, it was necessary to cross the stream above an important waterfall. Getting back to his farm proved no problem, but while coming from his farm to his meadow-lands, the sun disappeared. So, it did not dry all the drops on the rocks. One of the oxen slid, into the "Puits d'Enfer ", pulling with it the cart , the harvest and the brave farmer. Nobody saw him ever again. |
